Experience SECME!

SECME offers local and regional educator workshops in partnership with its member districts, universities and industry partners. These may be developed to address specific STEM content needs and supported by district STEM or professional development funds, partner grants or other STEM initiatives. To provide its premier, STEM-focused professional development experience, SECME sponsors an Annual Summer Institute in partnership with one of its 41 member engineering universities. Check back with SECME in Mid-October for the location and dates for the 36th Annual SECME Summer Institute.


The 8-day SECME Institute Experience will encompass module strands for elementary, middle, and high school STEM classroom teachers as well as building- and district-leadership. In addition to earning professional development credit, participants are invited to attend the parallel, concurrent SECME STEM Pipeline Diversity Summit with university and corporate guests and the SECME National Student Competition and Awards Celebration.



The SECME Summer Institute Experience begins before you arrive…

SECME designs its professional development opportunity to bring together the “best of the best” in their fields of expertise:

From the classroom, SECME Master Teachers provide hands-on, standards-based teaching strategies, as well as mentoring support during Professional Learning Community sessions;

From The Host University Colleges of Engineering and Education faculty and staff provide cutting-edge learning and teaching experiences, as well as unique perspectives on equity and inclusion initiatives;

From SECME Member Universities and Corporate Partners, experts provide advanced K-12 inquiry-based STEM best practice and research innovations;

And from peers in the classroom and in leadership positions, fellow professionals provide networking with like-minded, dynamic educators from across the country.

The SECME Summer Institute Experience has an impact that will follow you long after you depart…

SECME’s modules are not presented as isolated activities. All modules are aligned to national standards. As part of the Institute Experience, participants have opportunities to meet with Department of Education leaders from their home states to further align the SECME Institute module offerings to their states’ standards—and then time to “drill down” to align SECME program components, module content, and activities with local curriculum to meet local needs.

Professional learning communities led by SECME Master Teacher Mentors provide further opportunities for participants to share best practices, gain new resources and develop strategies for SECME program implementation.

Summer Institute Experience participants leave understanding STEM discipline concepts, methodology, and pedagogy – and the importance of integrating hands-on, inquiry-based learning into student instruction and activities!
